If you have never played a XCOM game new or old, I feel
extremely sorry for you because you are missing out on a
really great game series.

This is a reboot of an old series of the same name X-COM (with a hyphen) whose games spanned the late 1990s to early 2000s.

Do note:
Enemy Within is really an upgraded version of Enemy Unknown with some more gameplay elements, such as soldier body modifications, and equipment added to it as well as an
enemy “human” traitor faction called EXALT, two new alien
enemy units, and a new resource called Meld at your disposal.
Be sure to start on Within to obtain the best possible experience with the game.

The game’s primary focus is repelling, capturing, and killing aliens, and assimilating the alien’s technology for human combat use to do the above once again to gain more technology, repeat.

The story is basically a global alien invasion occurred and several countries banded together to form a XCOM (Extraterrestrial
Combat Unit), an elite military and research organization whose task is to defend human civilization from alien attacks,
You, the player, assume the role of commander of the XCOM forces.

Gameplay is turn based strategy using surrounding buildings and obstacles for cover (defensive) or terrain/altitude advantage as well as your unit’s inherent Soldier class characteristics.
Your missions are usually to wipe out or capture the aliens,
rescuing hostages, or reaching specific locations of strategic
importance.

Please try to minimize casualties, you do not want to lose your battle hardened veterans with good Skills (sane logic for any strategy game, really)
